Shylock is the antagonist character in William Shakespeare's play "The Merchant of Venice". He is a Jewish merchant who lends money to the Christian merchant Antonio, and demands a pound of Antonio's flesh as collateral. Shylock is depicted as a cruel and greedy character who is obsessed with money and revenge. His image has been controversial since the play's production, as some critics have interpreted him as a symbol of Jewish stereotypes and anti-Semitism. Despite this, some others have also seen Shylock's character as a victim of discrimination and injustice.
